Convection

At 70, Frances (Janelle Cochrane, A24’s THE DEATH OF DICK LONG) gets a second chance at life when she opens a cottage cookie business, but not everybody is ready to let go of the past.

In one nothing of a second FRANCES forever altered the course of her life.  Forty years later, released from jail after serving out her murder sentence, Frances (now 70) looks to start a new life as the owner of a cottage cookie business.  But SALLY, the daughter of the woman Frances killed so many years ago, is not ready to move on from the past and finds nothing sweet about Frances’ new venture.   While Frances seeks to transform ‘conviction’ to ‘convection’ with a dash here and a dash there, Sally tastes nothing but a fucking chocolate chip cookie.

    Director Statement

Convection is the exploration of how

the smallest choices – those moments that take only mere seconds – can have profound implications on the rest of our lives.

We explore this thread over a batch of cookies – where small changes to the dough, can have a big impact in the oven.

Layered over this story about small changes and second chances, is the exploration of the tension between documentary filmmakers and their subjects. Although often presented as neutral arbiters of truth, documentarians hold enormous sway over how a potential audience can view a subject. Through choices such as framing, color, questioning, music, etc., documentarians have the opportunity to turn victims into villains and murderers into heroes – all by the choices they make in telling ‘their story’.
